If you want to make your space appear larger, use curtains. Hang the curtain rods and drapes high, somewhere around four to six inches above the top of your window. The higher the curtains, the bigger your windows and room will appear. Just remember to compensate for the higher height with extra curtain length so that they will either float just above, kiss, or make a puddle on the floor.

Curtains are great for creating depth and filtering light. Start with attractive blinds, whether they’re wood, bamboo, honeycomb, or some other style. Hang your curtain rods and put up a single layer of sheers closest to the window followed by another layer of opaque drapes over top. This will create a beautiful multi-tiered effect that’s also functional. Then, close the solid curtains to keep light out and use the transparent sheers to let light in.
